Bursitis is an ailment caused by inflammation of the bursa. Bursa is the fluid-filled sacs that serve as a cushion between muscles, bones, joints and tendons. There are approximately 160 sacs located throughout the body, located between bones or tendons and skin. Collectively, these fluid-filled sacs are called “bursae.”

Bursitis can cause pain in joints, limited motion, and localized tenderness to the area. It is usually a temporary condition, and with appropriate treatment your bursitis pain can be managed. The following are some treatments through which you can manage you bursitis.

  • Nutritional Treatment – Increase your intake of foods containing vitamin A and C. Pineapple can help reduce inflammation in the joints. Avoid processed foods and foods high in sugar and fat.
  • Physical Therapy – Proper strengthening technique can help you avoid bursitis by using your muscles in a safe, more efficient manner.
  • Surgery – Sometimes an inflamed bursa must be surgically drained, but only rarely is surgical removal of the affected bursa necessary.
  • Acupuncture – It can help reduce swelling and inflammation, and relieve pain. Acupuncture needles are used to relieve pain.
  • Cushion your joints – If your work involves an activity such as prolonged kneeling, use protective cushions. These can be purchased at hardware stores–ask for roofers pads.
  • Massage therapy – It may help you relax and may reduce the discomfort from a sore joint. You should not use massage if your bursitis is caused by an infection.
  • Cold packs – The ice will help to control the inflammation and decrease swelling. You should not introduce your body to the cold for more than 20 minutes.
