Frozen Shoulder

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is an extremely painful condition in which movement of the shoulder is severely restricted. Many people with this condition experience extreme stiffness and pain. Shoulders are more prone to injuries and pains because their sockets are smaller compared to the size of the ball of your upper arms. Generally people between the ages of 40 and 70 are more prone to developing a frozen shoulder.

Pain in your shoulders can be a result of many conditions and causes. It can be due to a general wear and tear as you grow old or constant use of your shoulders in activities and sports such as playing volleyball, baseball pitching as well as lifting heavy weights. Injuries are also culprits of pain even years after the injury happened. It can also be brought about by other conditions such as arthritis, frozen shoulder syndrome, bursitis, and inflammation of the tendons as well as dislocation of your shoulders.

If you are one of the many who complain on pain on the shoulders, here are few treatment options that can help you find relief.

  • Painkillers – painkillers, such as paracetamol, or a combination of paracetamol and codeine are prescribed to relieve pain.
  • Corticosteroid injections – Corticosteroid injections can help relieve pain and improve the movement in your shoulder.
  • Acupuncture & Acupressure – Acupuncture and acupressure are the most effective therapies for pain management. This gives almost immediate relief and results are very impressive.
  • Chiropractic treatment – The chiropractor will put pressure on the painful, tender areas to relieve any tension that may subside.
  • Massage therapy – The masseuse puts pressure on the muscles to release any adhesions of scar tissue that may be the cause of shoulder pain. He uses his hands to manipulate your shoulder.
  • Laser therapy – in laser therapy the energy from lasers (narrow beams of light) are used to stimulate your nervous system and reduce pain.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – small electrical pads (electrodes) are applied to the skin over your shoulder. The TENS machines delivers small pulses of electricity through the electrodes, which numb the nerve endings and control your pain.
  • Exercise – stretching exercises are done by using specific techniques to move the joint in all directions. Aerobic exercises are also good to help you improve your blood circulation and reduce soreness of the tendons in your shoulder.
  • Ayurvedic treatment – Medicines like Yograj-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Kaishor-Guggulu, Sinhanaad-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu and Punarnavadi-Guggulu are used to reduce the inflammation in the shoulder joint
  • Heat packs – Application of heat to the shoulder joint is also quite helpful in reducing pain and stiffness.
