Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
How to treat serious infection of the upper female reproductive system.
Most women don’t know how serious bacterial infection of the upper female reproductive system can get. In the United States, around 1.1 million cases of pelvic inflammatory disorder (PID) are observed, around 95,000 women get infertile because of PID, and if left untreated it can cause life-threatening ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and cancer.
You need to take this disorder very seriously to prevent very serious complications. Hence knowledge about causes of PID, its symptoms, and possible treatments is essential.
Causes of PID:
It’s a sexually transmitted infection. Women with infections of gonorrhoea or Chlamydia are at high risk. Gonorrhoea is caused by bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoea while Chlamydia is caused by bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. These two bacteria are responsible for up to 85% of cases of PID. Normally cervix prevents these bacteria from getting into the uterus. But if these sexually transmitted diseases left untreated then bacteria can infect the cervix. Infected cervix becomes susceptible and bacteria often pass into uterus infecting uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
PID often caused by different species of bacteria. Women who already have a history of PID become more at risk of getting it in the future. Vaginal douching also contributes to causing PID as it can force bacteria into the uterus.
Women with bacterial vaginosis have a higher risk of catching PID. It’s important to maintain the pH of the vagina. The internal structure and shape of the female reproductive system provides an easier path for bacteria to ascend to the pelvic cavity.
An anaerobic organism that don’t need oxygen and facultative anaerobe that can work with or without oxygen cause about 10% cases of PID.
Symptoms of PID:
Bacteria attacks inside lining of fallopian tubes damaging them thus causing infertility and tubal pregnancy. Symptoms of PID are as follows:
- The most common symptom is mild pain in the lower part of the abdomen.
- Vaginal discharge with abnormal colour or smell is another symptom of PID.
- Nausea, fever, vomiting, irregular menstrual cycle are the rest of the symptoms.
PID treatment:
- Most common treatment is oral antibiotic medicine depending on the type of infecting bacteria
- If infection is severe then antibiotic may be given via saline into a vein as per advice of PID doctor.
As most bacteria develop resistance to antibiotic medicine, the best treatment for PID is acupuncture. It helps to improve the immunity of the body to fight against bacteria. As per Chinese research, acupuncture helps greatly while treating chronic PID. If you want to avoid serious complications due to PID, acupuncture is one of the best treatments available.
